Geek Update........ Evernote & Kindle 2.0
Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 01:36PM Alright, I've got two things to share. One very helpful to many of you, and One that will raise my geek cred to new levels..... possibly to the point of mockery:)
I'll start with the helpful. I've had an Evernote account for a year now, but never really utilized it. Most people use it as a place to collect clippings from web pages, reciepts from purchases, voice memos, pictures, and notes. These are all processed by the Evernote software, which then allows you to search through them easily.
It is a desktop, web, and smart phone application that beautifully stays synced across all platforms. This means that you have access to and can add to your information from anywhere. Pretty amazing in itself, but the premium account is even more amazing because it allows you to attach any file format and syncs it as well.
For me, this means Evernote is my repository for ALL my files now. They are on my computer and on the web, constantly synced to each other. If my computer crashed today, I would still have access to all my stuff on another computer. My entire workflow has changed for the better. Here are a couple screen shots of Evernote on my laptop.
The first one shows my workflow on my current teaching series through 1 Corinthians. My Keynote presentation, sermon schedule, and promo material are at the top, and my research on each section of 1 Corinthians is at the bottom.

The second one is for the seminary course I'm currently enrolled in, Church History II. I have to keep copies of every assignment for the culminating portfolio at the end, and Evernote is taking care of that for me. Not to mention keeping me on track each week.

Everyone should check out the free version, you won't be sorry, and then perhaps take the plunge for the premium account.

Now for the second of my geek update. I got a Kindle several months ago as part of my seminary workload, and have been very happy with it. In addition, here are the books on it I'm reading for my current series on 1 Corinthians. I can take notes and clip quotes with the Kindle, that I can later transfer to my research workflow in Evernote.
Here is where my geek cred goes up, or you judge me as ridiculous. I used my Kindle Saturday to officiate the wedding of Jonas & Jessica Hamilton. Let that soak in for a minute................ Yes, I stood before the couple and a multitude of witnesses, reading the ceremony from a Kindle.
I typed out the ceremony, and transfered it over to my Kindle using the free conversion service Amazon offers. No turning of pages, no fumbling in a journal, just the silent pushing of a button to turn the page. This will become my preferred method of officiating from now on.

OK, let the comments begin:)

I wouldn't want you any other way! ;)
Your geek cred is a win.
Awesome. I have an evernote account, but hardly use it. I started using DROPBOX a few weeks back and it syncs files to work, home, and laptop. Works awesome. Glad you're getting good use from yours. Also, using your Kindle for something like that is awesomely smart. Nice work.
Thanks for the insight on using EN for sermon prep and seminary work.
+1 for officiating with a Kindle. :-)
